Interior and headlights would go on but not the radio. Then after a few tries at starting, the engine stopped trying to turn over and all I would hear is a clicking sound and the gauges would go crazy vibrating and dancing on the bottom portion of the gauges. At first, the engine wouldn't turn over but made a sound like it wanted to. But then the car wouldn't start up (this was the 6th total start). Next I wanted to run the Xterra around the neighborhood after all of the starting action and take another video of sounds while driving. Temperature gauge normal, SES light still on. Then I did that two more times and recorded the sound on the third try. I recreated my second start without any luck recreating the sound. At the end of that process (the second start) I heard a gurgling sound from the front passenger side after I turned the vehicle off and thought that was a new and odd sound. Of course, my Iphone ran out of memory in the middle of the first video, so I had to clear pictures off, delete the vid, and repeat the process. Then I revved the engine to go less than 3RPMs and created a video to listen for the timing CHAIN sound. So after that, I started the Xterra, and let it warm up. Bad news is the fluid is all over the place. Anyways, the good news is the radiator is clean without SMOD and my wife ran it earlier in the day with no problems. I asked her and she said she forgot she ran to the supermarket about an hour ago. Some semi-hot radiator fluid sprayed and leaked down the back of the front of the engine block when I opened the cap. My wife said she hadn't run the car all afternoon, it was cool to the touch, so I assumed it was OK to open it up. So I wanted to create a video to post to see if they thought I had that problem because my engine is pretty loud right now.īut first I wanted to check for signs of the radiator SMOD, so I opened the radiator cap with a rag. However, I saw videos of folks starting the Xterra and revving the RPMs to hear the timing CHAIN (not belt) sound and became paranoid I had this problem too. The 120K maintenance recommends replacing the belt now and sparkplugs about 15K miles ago (I plan to do the sparkplugs). I have started to hear squeaky noises in the Xterra engine during the last few thousands miles that I think is the result of the timing belt and pulleys/tensioners (the car especially acts up in the cold and/or during startup). So I suspect the SES light came on on Tuesday because the gas cap wasn't on tight again, because the SES light came on right after fillup, which is consistent with the previous three SES lights.Īnyways, recently I have been lurking on the Xterra Forums to check on 120K maintenance recommendations and read about common problems with the Xterra to be on the look out for, including the Strawberry Milkshake of Death radiator issue (where transmission fluid and coolant mix and presents itself in a strawberry milkshake liquid in the radiator) and some timing chain issues that present with a whirring noise. Didn't present any problems for a few fillups, an oil change at PepBoys, and a few thousand miles and a long road trip North and back over the holidays. Then it came back on about 20 miles right after another fillup, but that was because my wife didn't lock the cap correctly (I've read this is a common problem). I pulled the codes, which was consistent with the fuel cap issue and it went away after we cleared them and put the cap on correctly. We had the SES light come on about three months ago and realized my wife had left the gas cap at the station, which triggered the SES light. I filled the car up with gas on Tuesday and the SES light came on about 20 miles into the tank. It has been reliable since I bought it with 48K on it in 2010. I have a 2006 Xterra SE with about 119K miles on it.
